Standing in the Adelaide Botanic Garden on the eve of the Sohn Hearts & Minds conference earlier this month, sympathy wasn’t the first emotion that sprang to mind.

Here were the good and great of Australia’s funds management community, sipping Penfolds and swapping war stories as they prepared to listen to their peers pitch their best stock ideas and raise millions for medical research. As dusk descended, life felt pretty good.
