The federal government is seeking Electoral Commission advice as it comes under pressure to invoke South Korean-like bans on AI fake images and videos during the election campaign.

The push for urgent laws to ban deep fakes came as independent senator David Pocock released AI-generated videos of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton. The counterfeit videos showed the pair separately announcing support for a total ban on gambling advertising.
