Jim Chalmers is already practising election campaign lines suggesting that any weaknesses in the Australian economy can be linked to policies of the new Trump administration rather than any failings of the Albanese government.

It was becoming increasingly difficult for Labor to continue blaming overseas forces beyond Australia’s control for inflationary pressures – particularly as inflation and interest rates were receding more quickly elsewhere.
