Trump picks put Australia in the crossfire with China

Anthony Albanese looked happy enough to clasp hands with China’s Xi Jinping in the front row of leaders at the conclusion of the G20 summit. The prime minister could also politely endorse Xi’s doublespeak in promoting free trade over protectionism while the world waits to see how Donald Trump’s promise of big new tariffs is implemented.

But Australia’s tricky relationship balancing China as its major trading partner and the US as its key security partner is about to get much tougher to negotiate.
