As Bashar al-Assad fled to Moscow, the rebels who toppled him tore down the statues and ordinary Syrians danced in the streets of Damascus. It was an extraordinary and swift reversal of fortune for Assad’s regime which ruled for 50 years.

The world is still grappling with the speed of these events and the fall of a brutal dictator who all but destroyed the country. But already concerns are rising about whether the collapse will trigger new chaos and violence across the Middle East.
