Intel chief executive officer Pat Gelsinger has been forced out after the board lost confidence in his plans to turn around the iconic chipmaker, which has become an also-ran in the artificial intelligence gold rush.

His departure comes as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Samsung joined a $US700 million funding round for a US Nvidia rival, called Tenstorrent, which values the ambitious firm at about $US2.6 billion.
