Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s new boss will restructure it to give musicians more of a say and introduce concerts in outer suburbs to rebuild a reputation harmed by this year’s furore over pianist Jayson Gillham’s pro-Palestinian remarks on stage.

Richard Wigley, the MSO’s interim managing director since August, who was made permanent last week, for legal reasons would not comment on how he would prevent a repeat of that incident, which resulted in Gillham suing the orchestra for alleged discrimination.
