Tokyo | An Australian accused of smuggling amphetamines in a suitcase wept in a Japanese court on Thursday, nearly two years after her arrest, declaring her innocence and saying she was tricked into carrying the drugs as part of an online romance scam.

Donna Nelson, who ran as the Greens candidate for the West Australian electorate of Pearce in the 2022 federal election, was apprehended at Narita International Airport in January 2023 allegedly carrying about two kilograms of methamphetamine.
