Faced with the reality that incumbents across the globe are being punished by inflation-weary voters, the Albanese government is not disputing the assertion that Australians are worse off now than three years ago.

So, as Opposition Leader Peter Dutton apes Donald Trump’s signature appeal to voters – “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” – Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is asking the counterfactual.
