Facing growing concern about Labor’s rushed social media ban for children under 16, Communications Minister Michelle Rowland has told colleagues that platforms will not be able to compel users to hand over sensitive identification documents for age verification.

A small group of Labor MPs expressed concerns internally about how the laws would operate on Tuesday, while Coalition members including Alex Antic, Keith Pitt and Matt Canavan flagged plans to vote against the bill in the Senate this week.
