The Liberal Party’s moderate wing has suffered a blow with the faction’s most senior figure, Senate leader Simon Birmingham, announcing his retirement from politics.

Addressing the Senate on Thursday afternoon, the opposition’s foreign affairs spokesman warned the Coalition against veering too far to the right, saying little was gained by culture wars, politicians obsessing over what happens in people’s private bedrooms or overriding evidence-based medical advice.
