Dire times at Melbourne’s elite Australian Club, where Tupperware salesman turned newish club president Charles Henry is doing all he can to maintain slipping standards.

“The Australian Club is an escape from the modern world and our rules and traditions protect this,” he told members of the male-only William Street institution recently in an email. The pity is, some insist on taking liberties, particularly regarding the dress code.
