ANZ investors see new chief executive Nuno Matos as a clean slate

ANZ has picked a new chief executive from outside its ranks, and investors hope the appointment of former HSBC wealth boss Nuno Matos will appease regulators and resolve questions about the culture of the bank.

Mr Matos, 57, was chosen over internal candidates Mark Whelan, who runs ANZ’s institutional bank, and Maile Carnegie, its retail banking chief. The appointment comes at a crucial time for ANZ, as it moves millions of customers on to its new Plus technology platform and integrates the old Suncorp banking business, which it bought for $4.9 billion.
