Australian National University will axe at least 50 jobs and merge its health and science colleges as part of a major overhaul to slash $250 million from its spending next year ahead of a plunge in fee revenue caused by the federal government’s cap on foreign students.

Senior economists said the university under chancellor Julie Bishop had been left extra vulnerable to the loss of revenue from fewer overseas enrolments after running big operating deficits for three of the past four years.
