Albanese backflips on sexuality census question

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been forced into an embarrassing backflip over plans to exclude questions about sexuality from the next census, after a wave of protests including from senior Labor MPs.

The government earlier this week pulled three new questions about sexuality orientation, gender identity and sexual variation from consideration for the 2026 census, which senior ministers argued would be divisive.
