The Australian Bureau of Statistics proudly claims the census provides a snapshot of Australia. Until it doesn’t.

The decision to shelve any updates to the decidedly last-century census, most notably to better understand the queer and trans population, raises uncomfortable questions about whether the nearly $600 million census should be shelved.
